Want Some Pesticides with that Apple?

I meant to post this guide to pesticides in produce a while ago, but I kept getting side—tracked. I’ve been inspired by a recent run—in with a local paper to finally post the guide and this report from the Environmental Working Group. There are some fruits and veggies that incorporate pesticides into themselves more readily than others. By avoiding the big culprits (or only buying them organically grown), you can reduce your pesticide exposure by 90%!

The guide is also useful if you are on a budget and are trying to increase your consumption of organic foods. If you can’t afford to go completely organic, you can focus on switching away from the most harmful non—organic choices. As fellow eco-blogger GreenGeek points out, you can grow many of the most contaminated veggies at home. This is a great idea, especially with the price of bell peppers and berries.

If you are too lazy (or busy) to check out the page, here’s what you need to avoid if it’s conventionally grown:
• Apples
• Bell Peppers
• Celery
• Cherries
• Imported Grapes
• Nectarines
• Peaches
• Pears
• Potatoes
• Red Raspberries
• Spinach
• Strawberries

If you bring this wallet guide, the fish guide, and some re—usable bags when you go grocery shopping, you’ll make a huge impact on your health and the health of your environment. Loads of benefits for just a tiny bit of effort sounds pretty good to me!
